Making it happen

Ashley Stafford’s journey with Offshoot is a remarkable story of transformation, determination, and resilience. When he first attended an Offshoot workshop at the age of 14, Ashley was a young student struggling in school and facing an uncertain future. Despite leaving school without any formal qualifications, he found a welcoming space in Offshoot’s filmmaking community—a place where his passion for media would flourish and set him on an unexpected path.

From the beginning, Ashley was captivated by the world of film. He became a dedicated participant, attending every workshop he could. His commitment didn’t go unnoticed, and although he lacked traditional qualifications, he was accepted into the Media Production course at West Suffolk College, thanks to the experience he had accumulated with Offshoot. Over the next two years, Ashley’s confidence grew as he developed his skills and built an impressive film showreel. His time at college was pivotal in shaping his career ambitions and building a foundation of experience that would lead to even greater opportunities.

In 2013, with a CV reflecting a solid background in media and film, Ashley set his sights on Ravensbourne University. However, he was concerned that his lack of formal qualifications might hold him back. But once the university saw the extent of Ashley’s work with Offshoot and his accomplishments at college, they offered him an unconditional place—recognising his passion and potential above all else.

Reflecting on his journey, Ashley shares, “I first became interested in filmmaking when I was 13 years old. However, my experiences with film at school were quite limited initially.” He credits his early exposure to an external film project as the spark that ignited his passion, pushing him towards Offshoot and further media opportunities.

Throughout his time in college and beyond, Ashley continued to gain valuable hands-on experience. “My media experience expanded significantly in college,” he says, “as I gained confidence through work experience opportunities. These experiences allowed me to develop my own client base and work independently.” Ashley’s proactive approach to learning helped him to carve out a niche in the film industry, even before he completed his degree.

Once at university, Ashley dove deeper into practical work, seizing every opportunity to collaborate with other students in TV and film. This collaborative environment allowed him not only to refine his own skills but also to contribute to the projects of others. “My decision to attend university proved to be valuable,” Ashley reflects. “It provided me with a supportive environment to further explore my passion for filmmaking—and have fun!”

For Ashley, the key to success in the film industry is clear: action. He advises, “My advice to those interested in entering the film industry is simple: take action. Rather than waiting for opportunities to arise, actively seek out experiences. Whether it’s speaking to professionals, attending industry events, or seeking internships, taking initiative is key.”

Ashley’s story is a testament to what young people can achieve when they find supportive environments that nurture their passions. He has come a long way from his early struggles, proving that with resilience and determination, it’s possible to build a successful career in film—even without conventional qualifications. As he puts it, “Don’t just sit around waiting for something to happen; go out and make it happen.”

"Meeting and working with Paul and the Offshoot Foundation has changed my life. I never thought I would amount to much and was told that by many people. He showed me that with commitment and hard work, I can achieve. I have to thank the Offshoot Foundation for showing faith in me and giving me a focus in life. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it."
