Alfie’s story is a testament to the transformative power of The Offshoot Foundation and the impact of early exposure to film on young creatives. Starting as a curious teenager making YouTube videos, Alfie has transitioned to a professional effects lead in London’s post-production industry.
Finding Inspiration and Building Skills
Alfie’s journey began in Year Nine when Paul and Dan from Offshoot visited his high school to produce a promotional video. The three-day workshop introduced students to filmmaking basics—camera work, editing, and lighting. This experience sparked Alfie’s interest in film. “I hadn’t delved into filmmaking before; my interests were more aligned with creating fun videos on YouTube with friends at home,” he recalls. After the workshop, he asked Paul if he could join him for work experience the following year. Paul agreed, and Alfie spent months preparing.
Over time, Alfie’s involvement with Offshoot grew. Paul gave him small editing projects to keep his skills sharp, and Alfie loved the hands-on experience, learning to use cameras, work with gear like tripods and sliders, and film interviews. “Even after all these years, I still find the same enjoyment in my day-to-day job,” he says, reflecting on those early days.
Learning Through Experience
Beyond technical skills, Alfie’s time with Offshoot taught him essential lessons in filmmaking. He recalls spending one summer observing Dan conduct interviews, learning how Dan put interviewees at ease by chatting with them during setup. These subtle but powerful techniques became part of Alfie’s own approach in his professional career. Working with Offshoot also gave Alfie confidence. As a teenager, he conducted interviews with MPs and CEOs—an intimidating experience at first, but one that built his poise. “Being a teenager at the time, it was a bit daunting talking to people who were so important and much older than me,” he says. This early experience communicating in high-stakes settings became invaluable in his later work.

A Lasting Impact and Community
For Alfie, Offshoot is more than a stepping stone; it’s a community of friendship, experience, and opportunity. One of his proudest moments was transitioning from student to teacher, mentoring young participants just as he had once been mentored. “It was incredibly inspirational and fulfilling when, years later, I found myself in their position,” he shares. “It was amazing to be teaching at the workshops and seeing people younger than me, who were far more passionate and capable than I was at their age.”
Today, Alfie is a successful VFX artist in London, grateful for the foundation that helped him find his path. “Thank you, The Offshoot Foundation, for everything you have created for me.” Alfie’s story is a powerful reminder of how early opportunities, mentorship, and community can shape young creatives and help them make their mark in the world of film.
