Dan’s story highlights how passion, hard work, and community support can open doors in the film and TV industry. He first joined Offshoot as a Year 9 student in the young filmmakers’ group, where he quickly proved himself a talented editor. Recognizing Dan’s potential, Paul brought him on board for projects, helping him build his showreel and CV. This early experience set the stage for a promising career in media, leading Dan from local projects to roles at major networks like Russia Today and BT Sport.
Pursuing Filmmaking at West Suffolk and Ravensbourne
Dan continued his media studies at West Suffolk College, where he completed a two-year National Diploma in video production. This course allowed him to experiment with various techniques, including animation and 3D modeling, which broadened his skill set. Reflecting on these experiences, Dan recalls, “The program gave me the opportunity to experiment with different film techniques and find what I really enjoyed.”
After completing his diploma, Dan went on to study broadcast operations and production at Ravensbourne University in London, becoming the first of Paul’s students to attend the university. University provided Dan with valuable industry exposure and hands-on experience. “The best part of university was that it enabled me to go out and gain experience in the industry,” he says. Surrounding himself with like-minded individuals, Dan worked on live projects, produced TV shows, and learned the ins and outs of the film and broadcasting world.

Building a Career in Film and Television
Throughout his journey, Dan kept working with Offshoot, refining his skills while also gaining industry experience with production companies in London. After graduating with a 2:1 degree, he secured roles with networks like Russia Today and on The Clare Balding Show for BT Sport. Reflecting on his path, Dan emphasizes the importance of building connections and gaining practical experience early on.
For young people considering a career in media, Dan’s advice is clear: “University is a great opportunity to meet and work with people who are interested in the same industry as you. It also allows you to make contacts, which is crucial in this industry. I don’t think I could have entered the career I have without attending university, or at least not gotten into it as quickly as I did.” Dan’s story is a powerful reminder that dedication, support, and education can help young creatives make their mark in the film and TV industry.
