Mikey’s Story: Finding Confidence, Creativity and Community at Offshoot

We believe creativity builds confidence and connection – and Mikey’s journey shows just that. In the testimonial below, Mikey and his mum Alexandra share how he found belonging, purpose, and joy through our Activities Unlimited sessions in Bury St Edmunds. From a quiet boy with a love of trains and digital art to a confident young filmmaker, Mikey’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when young people are given space to grow.

A Parent’s Perspective – Mikey’s Journey with Offshoot

Mikey is 12 years old and has been home educated for the past year, with much of his learning being interest-led. He has very specific passions – especially trains, digital art, and collecting toy trains. Over time, he developed a fascination with combining these interests to create and edit short animated films featuring his trains.

Finding a group or club that aligned with his interests was incredibly challenging. I didn’t know where to begin in helping him explore this creative path, so I started reaching out -emailing anyone who might be able to support him. That’s when I discovered the Offshoot Foundation, and I immediately knew they were the right fit.

At first, Mikey joined a couple of school holiday sessions. He wasn’t quite old enough for the weekly evening group yet, but as soon as he turned 11, I signed him up -and we’ve never looked back.

In the beginning, Mikey was very anxious and withdrawn. He often preferred to sit on his own and only participated in group activities for short periods, if at all. But what made Offshoot special was the way they gave him the space to join in on his own terms – there was never any pressure. Slowly, he began to come out of his shell.

Now, Mikey is thriving. he’s learning how to film and edit with growing confidence, and he’s not afraid to ask questions or seek direction. The facilitators are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, and Mikey is soaking it all up. He looks forward to every session and is usually ready to leave the house far too early because he’s so excited to go! Seeing his growth and confidence blossom has been a joy. These weekly sessions have become a lifeline for him – and for me.

Knowing Mikey is in safe, capable hands for two hours every Tuesday evening gives me much needed peace of mind. As a parent of a child with SEN, time for myself is rare. Offshoot gives me the chance to recharge, even if it’s just a couple of hours. And what’s more – we’ve built a little routine around it. We chat in the car on the way there and back… and yes, we often enjoy a cheeky McDonald’s on the way home!

In Mikey’s Own Words

What do you enjoy most about coming to the Tuesday evening sessions?

“I enjoy absolutely everything – the new friends, the new skills I’ve learnt, the people who run it are so friendly and welcoming, and just generally coming along for an evening.”

What do you feel you get out of the sessions?

“New friends, socialising with people who have the same interests, and getting tips on filming – and of course, having a fun time.”

Do you have a favourite memory or activity so far?

“Nothing sticks out in my mind as every moment and activity so far is too memorable for me! Although I’m currently really proud of the project I’m working on, so that’s probably my highlight so far.”

Anything else you’d like to add?

“I hope that all the other children who join in continue to get as much out of it as I do, and I would like to give a special thanks to Anna, Hannah, Paul, Emily and Corinne. I’m having an absolutely splendid time and it’s all down to you all – so I thank you all for it.”
